About Us
Who are the people that are running VEA?
VEA was formed in 2006 by a "grass roots" group of county employees who were then represented by SEIU Local 998.
What is VEA?
The Ventura Employees’ Association (VEA) was formed by a “grass roots” group of people who are employed with the County of Ventura. VEA is incorporated in accordance with the requirements of the California Secretary of State as a Non-profit Mutual Benefit Corporation and is recognized by the California State Franchise Tax Board and the Federal Internal Revenue Service. VEA is not currently affiliated with any other national, regional, State or local organizations. Any decision to affiliate will be determined by the entire VEA membership.
The founders of VEA believe that County employees have legitimate concerns and reasonable contributions for improving the quality of their lives both inside and outside of the workplace, as well as improving the quality of County services where possible. VEA founders also believe that Ventura County employees are capable of speaking on their own behalf when determining what will best address their workplace needs and concerns.
Consequently, Ventura Employees’ Association (VEA) was created for the purpose of representing Ventura County public employees with a strong and focused local voice addressing local needs in future contract negotiations and other labor related issues.
VEA's founders are united in the belief that as Ventura County employees, they are assets to their employer and are to be valued and respected for having the skills, talents and professionalism required to provide the highest standard of public service. The founders believe that Ventura County public employees are fundamental to the foundation and backbone of Ventura County Local Government, enabling our Government to efficiently provide important and necessary services to those living and/or doing business in Ventura County.
VEA is currently governed by an elected Board of Directors consisting of eight County employees. This Board consists of four Executive Board Members (President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer), one General Board Member, and a Negotiating Committee. As required by California corporation law, VEA's Board of Directors have adopted and ratified By-Laws to govern the organization. Furthermore, VEA has negotiated an agreement with a local law firm to provide legal services and legal counsel during the organizational process.
The founders and organizers of VEA are committed to providing the Public Employees of Ventura County with the unique opportunity to create and develop the Union that YOU envision, a union that will be supportive, inclusive and responsive to the issues that immediately concern us all in this ever rapidly changing world that we call Ventura County. Because VEA has no individual history, all ideas and methods to best serve the membership are welcomed.
